Char Harrison (they/them)

Hi I’m Char, from Devon. I’m really excited for my second year helping with ClimbOut. I make sure the volunteers are happy and know what they’re meant to be doing. I’m so grateful that we have all these amazing people who lend a hand in between their climbing and meeting new people!

I am the new member officer for the southwest climbing club Let’s Go Belay and Boulder Together. I’ve seen many times how LGBT+ people benefit from a safe, dedicated space to explore their body, movement and sport, many of whom (like me) would not feel comfortable in other sporting spaces.

I love the mental aspect of climbing, from problem-solving to mindset, and I’ve seen personal growth off the wall as I’ve learnt more about it. I love bouldering, whether it’s on granite on Dartmoor, the Peak grit stone, or at the sea.

ClimbOut increasingly feels like a positive movement, like activism. Especially in an election year, creating our own inclusive space, making sure as many people get access to the outdoors as possible, removing barriers for those facing systemic oppression and keeping the environment in mind, this is how I want the world to look- everyone at the table, and thriving. I see the community being built from the start, from dorms or the camping field, around the campfire, or on the courses our amazing instructors run. My hope is that through ClimbOut, we change the world in a small way, making the outdoor industry a bit more diverse and inclusive.
