The FUNdamentals workshops aim to help develop climbing coaches who know what to coach, how to coach, and how to build a person’s confidence, climbing ability and enthusiasm.
This first workshop in the Fundamentals of Climbing series – The FUNdamentals of Climbing 1: Movement – is a one-day workshop which looks at the very basics of climbing, focusing on balance and movement and the key principles of the sport.
The main topics covered are:
- The theory of Long Term Participant Development (LTPD) that underpins coaching
- The differences between calendar age and training age and differences in boys’ and girls’ physical and emotional development
- The key principles of agility, balance and coordination
- What is centre of gravity and weight transfer?
- Economy of movement
- Different footholds and handholds and their specific uses
- Warming-up techniques and some basic climbing games

Minimum Age: 14 (Under 18s must be supervised by an adult).
Pre-requisite experience: There is no prerequisite experience required for this course.
Required equipment: If you have any other climbing equipment such as rock shoes, harness and belay plate please bring them along with you.
